The Great Mage Returns After 4000 Years is one of the best power-fantasy Manhwa ever written. If you love Solo Leveling and also enjoy the fantasy of an overpowered mage The Great Mage Returns After 4000 years is a hybrid and a manhwa that you will definitely enjoy.
I am not comparing The Great Mage Returns After 4000 Years to Solo Leveling for the sake of it. It is seriously at that level.
Without further ado, let’s discuss what makes The Great Mage Returns such a fantastic power fantasy manhwa!
Art
In a mage fantasy manhwa, great art is incredibly important. The magical abilities and fantastical creatures depicted in these stories are often central to the plot, and art is crucial in bringing these elements to life. Without high-quality art, the magic and fantasy elements of the manhwa would not be as engaging or immersive.
I am happy to let you know that the art in The Great Mage Returns is truly outstanding. From the intricate and detailed character designs to the dynamic and action-packed fight scenes, every page is a feast for the eyes. The artist’s use of color and lighting is masterful, creating a sense of atmosphere and mood that immerses the reader in the world of the manhwa. The art in this manhwa also conveys the excitement and hype that are absolutely essential for a power fantasy story.
Overall, the art in The Great Mage Returns is a major strength of the manhwa, and it greatly enhances the reading experience.
Setting and Plot
Lucas Trowman, the strongest mage in the world. Four thousand years ago, the 9-star mage rose up and rebelled against the demigod, a being so powerful that it defies the laws that make up the fabric of reality. Despite his struggle, the demigod easily crushed Lucas and sealed him away for 4000 years.
In the present day, Frey Blake is bullied by everyone around him and, tired of the constant abuse, decides to end his life. For some unknown reason, the moment Frey loses consciousness, Lucas is freed from his seal and finds himself possessing Frey’s body. With a new body and centuries of anger boiling inside him, Lucas gets a second chance for redemption and begins his journey to take down the demigod once again,
Is it good though?
While the setting and plot of The Great Mage Returns are not groundbreaking, they are executed very skillfully. With good pacing, a plethora of power-ups, and plenty of hype moments, it seems that the author of The Great Mage Returns has discovered chemical X and the formula for success in power fantasy series and is using it perfectly in their work. So, yes, it’s good, it’s very good.
Characters
Now, I am going to talk about the characters of The Great Mage Returns After 4000 Years with the caveat that this is a power fantasy manhwa and like most similar series it is not a multilayered character-driven story. The story is like an F1 car, constantly racing from hype moment to hype moment with tremendous speed, meaning that there is not much time invested in character development, pretty much similar to Solo Leveling.
So what can be said about these characters?
The Protagonist
Frey Blake aka Lucas Trowman is an overpowered badass protagonist who delivers what he needs to deliver. He is strong, brave, and protective of his friends. And while there is not much else to break down about him as a character, he simply is a hype machine. It’s like he has a direct line to the 15-year-old that still exists in all of us.
The Supporting Cast
The supporting cast of the Great Mage returns consists of a pleasant ensemble of characters. Their goal in the series is to assist so Frey Blake can score, and they do it well. They are not the main attraction of the series but they still carry their own weight and are never a detriment to the story.
In comparison to Solo Leveling, the supporting cast of the Great Mage Returns has more agency and feels more relevant to the story.
Not gonna lie though, Lucas is the star of the show and that is evident throughout the series. Other than some cool moments here and there the supporting characters of this manhwa are there mainly as devices to showcase how cool and powerful Lucas is.
The Antagonists
There are two kinds of antagonists in the series. First, there is the Demigod Lord. The final boss is the epitome of an overpowered being. Secondly, there is every other antagonist.
For every antagonist that is not the Demigod Lord, it never feels like Frey Blake will actually lose to them. Even with the twists and turns I never thought that something truly bad would happen to either Frey or any of his friends. Still, they are there so we can all marvel at how badass Frey is which is another point of similarity with Solo Leveling.
The Demigod Lord’s existence in the story is inherently more interesting than any other villain because he is the biggest obstacle that Frey needs to overcome in the series.
Furthermore, while for the most part of the series Lord is expressionless and stoic, like a true otherworldly being, he has begun to show some emotion in the latest chapters, meaning that we might see some more layers to the character in the future. I would not bet on it, due to the nature of the story but the potential as of right now is still there.
Still, defeating him will not be a matter of Frey overpowering him, which will make their encounter different than almost any other in the series.
Conclusion
The Great Mage Returns leaves readers consistently wanting more, thanks to its expert execution of the elements that make the power fantasy series engaging.
The pacing is excellent, and the inclusion of power-ups and hype moments keep readers on the edge of their seats.
The Great Mage Returns After 4000 is a top manhwa able to straight up compete pound-for-pound with the best of them. The series is a must-read for fans of the mage manhwa and power fantasies!
